When talking to my mother last night, she related to me that she and Uncle Koch would sit in the kitchen of the Michigan farm and listen to grandma tell stories about her father. She said she would lay in the loft of their home in Poland and listen to her father tell the village men about his travels and the books he as read. She was fascinated about all he had to teach.Great Grandfather Jacob was an extremely well educated man who read many books and had traveled extensively throughout Europe before he got married and settled down.
He was a weaver by trade. They lived in a 2 room house with a leanto room added where he worked. He would weave flax during the summer to make white cloth and he would weave wool for the winter months. He would exchange cloth with the tailor inorder to clother his family. Grandma would sit sit and listen to him talk as he wove the cloth. He loved Grandmother very much. He would give her trinkets he got in town. The Zajac brothers had to work to get to America. Grandmother, however, was sent to America by her father and he paid for the passage. It is amazing to me that this father would send his children away knowing he would never see them again in this lifetime.
