Quoting from Freda Compston "Mother told me that Grandmother Grandon told her that Grandfather was called to the army (North, I think) in the last desperate days of the Civil War. The morning he left, he insisted on last minute relations, and 9 mo. to the day, Clement was born. Counting back from Jan. 20, 1866, would be April 20, 1865, and that checks out, as the war ended (April 26, 1865) before Grandfather got into it to see any action. Since he named his son the C.L.V. apparently he had strong sympathies toward the South."
Following quoted from letter written by Freda Cumpston to Melva Wilbur, Jan. 30, 1972: "C.L.V. was Clement and he was named for Clement L. Vallandigham (1820-71) Civil War 'Copperhead,' born New Lisbon, Ohio. Ohio Congressman, convicted of sedition by Military court 1863; sentence of imprisonment committed by Lincoln to banishment to Confederate States; subsequently supreme commander Knights of the Golden Circle."
"Clem's boy worked for the telephone or electric company and came in contact with a live wire. Was knocked to the ground and died sometime later as a result of the fall.
Letter from Freda Cumpston, September 9, 1977 said "Uncle Clem" who was killed in an accident in 1908, had 2 sons. One died in 1945, and son Herbert Grandon lives in Waynesburg, & will be 70 yrs. old on Nov. 4, 1977.
