Rose Cemetery, Moundsville, Marshall Co., West Virginia. He married Sarah Elizabeth Underwood on 17 Nov 1859 in Marshall Co., West Virginia.
Family tradition says that he was part of the underground railroad, helping escaped slaves by rowing them across the Ohio River from the Virginia side to the Ohio side. Served in the 12th West Virginia Infantry, Company C in Wheeling, West Virginia. Family tradition also says that he held General Grant's horse at the courthouse in Appomattox, Virginia when General Lee surrendered. His pension application in 1891 described him as 5'-10" tall with a fair complexion, blue/gray eyes and dark hair. He was wounded during the war by a "minnie ball" in the right shoulder/neck which was never removed.
