Obituary:
Preston F. Grandon, 80, editor and publisher of The Daily Gazette, died early today at Community General Hospital after an illness of more then a month.
A newspapersman's newspaperman, Mr. Grandon spent his entire life to being a newspaperman and he was devoted to his work. he had few other interests except for his family and helping others.
His life as an newspaperman began at an early age at newspapers owned by his father, David W. Grandon, in Adrian and Ann Arbor, Mich. His first job was cleaning kerosene lamp chimneys. At 16 he was the country's youngest pressman and was used as an example by the Duplex Printing Press Co.
He knew the newspaper business in every detail and every department. An excellent Lino-type operator, pressman and all-around printer, Mr. Grandon often filled in as Linotype operator until the last few years.
His association with The Daily Gazette began in 1915 when he moved to Sterling after his father purchased the newspaper here.
In 1919, Preston Grandon purchased the newspaper in Quincy, Mich, and operated that newspaper until 1925 when he purchased the Post and Tribune Newspapers in LaSalle, Ill. When he took over the LaSalle Post in 1925, it was, in his words, "the poorest newspaper in the U.S." However, within a few years he consolidated in Post and Tribune and under his guidance, the LaSalle newspaper became equal to the Sterling Gazette.
After the death of his father in 1943, Preston Grandon operated both The Daily Gazette and the LaSalle newspapers. In 1947 he sold the LaSalle Post Tribune and returned to Sterling as editor and publisher of The Daily Gazette.
Preston F. Grandon used his influence and the influence of his newspaper to help the community and the individuals of the community. He gave help to those who could not find it elsewhere. His work week was seven days every week, including holidays. Until his illness, he had not missed a day at
his office in The Daily Gazette for more then five years. The newspaper was his "product" and he checked every edition as soon as it came off the press. he had an uncanny knack of finding errors or a poorly printed page. Often stating he was "not in politics" he took a great interest in what was going on locally, statewide and nationally Constant callers to his office were United States Senators governors and other state officials.
His office was always open to who wished his help or advice. He usually had a solution, whether with advice or aid, often financial. The majority of this aid remained anonymous. Those he counseled and helped ranged from employees to clergymen, educators, businessmen and our political leaders.
Preston F. Grandon was born on Feb. 6, 1888, in Charleston, W. Va., the son of David W. and Elizabeth
Dakan Grandon. He attended school in Adrian, Mich. Mr. Grandon was united in marriage to Marie C. Moncelle on June 9, 1955. She survives with one son, David P. Grandon, Woodlawn Rd; three sisters Mrs. Lyle (Mae) Wilcox, Sterling; Mrs. Clifford (Delphia) Westerman,
Milwaukee, Wis., and Mrs. William R. (Marguerite) Roberts, Jackson, Mich; two step children, Mrs. James (Marjorie) Taylor, Dixon, and Robert Moncelle, Rockford; four grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his Frist and second wives, Delia Dickinson in 1945 and Evelyn Dickinson in 1954; one brother, George G. Grandon in 1935; and one sister, Mrs. Bradley (Jennie L.) Bull in August, 1968.
Mr. Grandon was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sterling, ordained an elder in the church on April 18, 1918.

Vermon Lodge 166 AF&AM in Adrian, Mich; the Quincy, Mich, order of the OES; the American Newspaper Publishers Association; Inland Daily Newspaper Association; National Newspaper Association and the Illinois Press Association.
